Bohna Peak

(UTM 559584)

Sunday Peak is located in Kern County, about 9 miles west of Kernville, 180 miles from Los Angeles. It lies within the Sequoia National Forest. Sunday Peak was added to the HPS Peak List in 1970. See the Summit Signature for more history and some background about the name of the peak.

Peak Guides
HPS has two current documented routes to the peak. Route 1 is 3 miles round trip and climbs 1400' on forested trail to a saddle then a simple bit of cross-country to reach the summit. Route 2 is 4 miles round trip and 2000' gain up a brushy ridge to the peak.

Older Peak Guides (routes may no longer be legal or safe, use caution!): 1974, 1991 and Microsoft Word version from 2007.

Current Conditions
  • Weather Forecast from the National Weather Service
  • Gate status: the gate at SR 155 and 24S07 (Route 1) is usually closed in the winter. It's also been frequently closed in recent summers, but Gregory Daly reported on our Facebook page on 8 July 2011 that this gate was open as of a few weeks ago. If in doubt (like, June/July 2011 was a long long time ago), check with the Kern River Ranger District office in Lake Isabella, 760-379-5646.
  • Status of State Route 155 from Caltrans
  • Deer hunting season - "The season in Zone D-8 shall open on the fourth Saturday in September and extend for 30 consecutive days." For more information, visit the California Fish and Game Commission.
  • Sequoia National Forest Incidents (usually fires) from InciWeb
  • Adventure Passes are not currently (2011) required in Sequoia National Forest.
