ROUTE 1

(USFS Adventure Pass may be required)
Distance: 6.25 mile round trip on road and cross-country
Gain: 1800'
Time: 3 hour round trip
Rating: Class 1, easy
Navigation: Easy

Original: Charlie Knapke, December 1996

DRIVING ROUTE 1

  • From the intersection of I-210 and Angeles Crest Highway (SR 2), drive north on Angeles Crest Highway 9.5 miles to Angeles Forest Highway. Turn left (north).
  • Go 9.9 miles to the entrance to Monte Cristo Campground on the right. Paid parking is available inside the campground at campsites (they no longer have a day use lot), or park outside the campground on SR2 at no charge. Off highway parking is available just north of the entrance, or approximately 1/8 mile south.

HIKING ROUTE 1

  • Immediately left just inside the campground take dirt road 2N23 just past the gate.
  • Go about 1.6 miles to a fork with 4N18 past the Black Cargo Mine, and as you approach the Monte Cristo Mine. Stay left as you switchback up hill toward Rabbit Peak.
  • Continue on this road for 1.05 miles, past a power line tower, to a prominent gully. Leave the road here.
  • From the bottom of the gully (4700'), contour south along a steep slope for about 50 meters, then ascend to meet Rabbit's south ridge at about the 4800' contour. Various use trails from the road access the ridge.
  • Hike up the old firebreak about 1/3 mile to the summit.

Note: This route was previously a partial drive-up, until the gate was locked and closed to vehicles. 1 3/4 miles longer than Route 2, it avoids a steep cross-country ridge by staying on the road.

HIKING ROUTE 2

  • From the parking area (3560'), hike up the dirt road (3N23) described in the Route 1 instructions for slightly less than 1 mile to where it crosses the ridge coming down south from the summit.
  • Leave the road here and go about 0.6 mile up a firebreak to meet a road (Route 1 hikes this road, 4N18).

  • Continue to the summit as directed in Route 1.

ALTERNATE ROUTES
