Description

Rabbit Peak #1 (5307’) is a mid-ridge peak that is often combined with Granite Peak #1 (6596′), Round Top (6316′) and Iron Mountain #3 (5040′) for a not so easy hike of the “Little Four” via the Monte Cristo Campground (10 mile loop) or Mill Creek Summit (16.4 mile lollipop). Generous views of the many peaks and canyons of the western San Gabriels, and of the Antelope Valley, accompany this 10-mile 4500′ gain hike. Route 1 describes the fire road from Monte Cristo to Rabbit Peak #1. The last section is off of the graded road up a steep use trail. Route 2 describes a variation of Route 1 where you follow a use trail up an intermediate ridge to then meet up with the fire road again. The loop from Monte Cristo Campground is a challenging cross country hike that includes a fire cut that may be one of the steepest “trails” in all the Angeles Forest. Prepare for route finding and bushwhacking if you embark on those loops.

Driving route

From the intersection of I-210 and Angeles Crest Highway (SR 2), drive north on Angeles Crest Highway 9.5 miles to Angeles Forest Highway. Turn left (north).
Go 9.9 miles to the entrance to Monte Cristo Campground on the right. Paid parking is available inside the campground at campsites (they no longer have a day use lot), or park outside the campground on SR2 at no charge. Off highway parking is available just north of the entrance, or approximately 1/8 mile south.

Hiking route

Immediately left just inside the campground take dirt road 2N23 just past the gate.
Go about 1.6 miles to a fork with 4N18 past the Black Cargo Mine, and as you approach the Monte Cristo Mine. Stay left as you switchback up hill toward Rabbit Peak.
Continue on this road for 1.05 miles, past a power line tower, to a prominent gully. Leave the road here.
From the bottom of the gully (4700′), contour south along a steep slope for about 50 meters, then ascend to meet Rabbit’s south ridge at about the 4800′ contour. Various use trails from the road access the ridge.
Hike up the old firebreak about 1/3 mile to the summit.

Route Notes

Note: This route was previously a partial drive-up, until the gate was locked and closed to vehicles. 1 3/4 miles longer than Route 2, it avoids a steep cross-country ridge by staying on the road.
