Location
Ross Mountain is a challenging peak that requires a summit of Mount Baden Powell before and after reaching the peak. Along the way, you will be rewarded with spectacular views of stout summits that rise from stalwart ridges extending in all directions, the steep wild canyons that split them, and the rivers and streams that cut those canyons — Mine Gulch southeast of Baden-Powell; Prairie Fork southwest of Blue Ridge; Copter Ridge descending eastward accompanying Iron Fork to the San Gabriel River; and San Antonio Ridge, traveling from Baldy to Big Iron and ushering Fish Fork towards the Narrows.
Route 1 is the approach to Baden Powell from Vincent Gap and Route 2 begins at Dawson Saddle. In either case, your hike down to Ross Mountain begins at the top of Mount Baden Powell. Follow the southeastern ridge and use trail down and along the ups and downs until reaching Ross Mountain. Remember, you have another 2,000’ climb to get back up to Mount Baden Powell, so plan your fitness levels and packs accordingly.
