PAST Scheduled Outings - 2010

This is a list of Hundred Peaks Section sponsored outings (with a smattering of other Sierra Club outings of interest to HPS) that have been published in the section newsletter, the Lookout and/or the Angeles Chapter Schedule of Activities and/or the section's mailing list for outings and announcements.

Jan 1 Fri Hundred Peaks, PV-SB, Long Beach, Natural Science
I: San Jacinto Peak (10,804'), Folly Peak (10,480'), Drury Peak (10,160'), Marion Mountain (10,320') via Snowshoe: Moderately paced, strenuous over varying terrain from the tram. We will attempt up to 4 peaks, resulting in 10 miles and 3500' gain. The leaders have made this San Jacinto pilgrimage for 9 years. The ocean, Mount Charleston and the Channel Islands have often been visible. Take time to learn from our naturalist about the fauna and flora. Bring 10 essentials, lunch, and water. Jan 6 Wed Wilderness Travel Course
I: Wilderness Travel Course begins in West Los Angeles: Want to become a more competent HPS trip participant or aspire to be a leader? This ten week Wilderness Travel Course uses classroom instruction and field experiences to teach skills for mountain and desert travel. The course includes navigation instruction using topo maps and compass, rock scrambling techniques, snow travel, how to choose equipment, backpacking food and nutrition, wilderness first aid, trip planning and lots more. I: Lookout Mountain #1 (5590'), Asbestos Mountain (5625'): Located 8 miles south-southwest of Palm Desert, these are two short hikes. Lookout is 1 mile round trip, 600' gain. MR: Eagle Mountain #2 (3806'), Smith Mountain (5913'), Corkscrew Peak (5804'): Climb striking Eagle Mountain #2 east of Death Valley via a non-standard route involving additional class 3 climbing fun, 3 miles round trip, 1800' gain. Afterward end the day on nearby Smith Mountain, 6 miles, 2500' gain, and then well car camp nearby in order to do Corkscrew, 7 miles round trip, 3300' gain, Sunday morning. This is a strenuous 4 mile round trip, 2200' gain hike. Other peaks in the area possible. If the gate is closed, we will do it from Chuckwalla, a strenuous 12 mile round trip, 4200' gain hike. Come join John Strauch and Shane Smith as they finish their 100th and final peak on the list - Red Hill (2 miles round trip, 800' gain). This will be John's 4th finish of the list and the first person to accomplish this!! Meet 8AM at the intersection of Interstate 8 and the exit for Ocotillo (25 miles west of El Centro). Forest Recovery and the 'Fire Follower' Plants: Two authorities on native plants will present an illustrated program Angeles Forest Recovery and the Fire Follower Plants at 7:30 PM Wednesday, March 24 at Eaton Canyon Nature Center (1750 N. Altadena Drive, Pasadena). Gabi McLean, president of the California Native Plant Society, San Gabriel Mountains Chapter, is a nature photographer and docent naturalist. Cliff McLean is a computer programming specialist. Together they produced a 2008 CD interpretive guide Plants of the San Gabriel Mountains: Foothills and Canyons. They know that wild lands are not destroyed by fire. Many plants survive and soon send up fresh shoots. And fire followers may appear only after a fire. O: Tejon Ranch Big Sycamore Canyon: Visit a beautiful area that has long been off limits because it was private property. Now that much of the land is preserved as open space, we can go visit. But we need to make advance arrangements with the Tejon Ranch Conservancy, and an opportunity is coming up soon. Join us for an easy 6 - 8 mile, 850' gain up-and-back hike in the area where the Pacific Crest Trail will be realigned through the Antelope Valley side of Tejon Ranch. I: Liebre Twins (6413'), nearby Bump (6803'): A second annual outing to the HPS historic peak Liebre Twins and a nearby neighbor - the high point of Tejon Ranch - that might be a possible Mount MacRuer. Total distance and gain is 9 miles/2600'. We'll hike among sycamores, oaks, and grasslands on our way to the spine of Tejon Ranch, where we'll intersect part of a proposed reroute of the PCT. We'll also enjoy views of the Antelope Valley and many other spectacular canyons and peaks. AWD high clearance vehicles recommended. O: Death Valley camping: Are we Crazy? NO! Join us on camping adventure as we camp at an elevation of 4000' in the mountains above Death Valley National Park on Friday evening (the days are warm and nights cool!). Trailhead in the 60's. Saturday, we'll hike (optional for attendees) to the top of Telescope Peak - the highest peak in the Park, at 11,000', with spectacular views in all directions. You will see Badwater in Death Valley on one side, and the Panamint Valley on the other... We also visit the Charcoal Kilns. The hike itself is a 3000' elevation gain in about 14 miles round trip. The hike is considered strenous due to the gain and distance. The weather while always unpredictable should be in the 60's and 70's. Dress in layers, bring 10 essentials for the hike and camping gear. Sunday optional peaks are avaliable. Trip includes happy hour snacks and a Saturday night hot pasta dinner. Annual Business Meeting: All are welcome to attend our annual business meeting, where nominations are finalized for the next year's Management Committee. In addition, proposals for Bylaw changes, peak additions and deletions and other matters on which members will vote are discussed and votes are taken on whether to put them on the ballot. The business meeting follows the monthly Management Committee meeting. Join us at 6:30 PM for the management meeting; 7 PM for the business meeting. We are meeting at the Ranger House in Griffith Park.
Directions: The Ranger House is located south of Los Feliz Blvd on the east side of Riverside Drive. It shares a large parking lot with Friendship Auditorium. From Los Feliz Blvd head south on Riverside Drive, past the soccer fields on your left to Friendship Auditorium. (Friendship Auditorium is white and the side facing Riverside Drive is a series of arches.) The entrance immediately in front of Friendship Auditorium may be the only entrance open to the parking lot. Enter here and proceed to the north end of the parking lot. The Ranger House is a smaller facility located in the extreme north end of the parking lot. The parking lot may be quite busy. Friendship Auditorium is heavily used by large groups. Do not despair: Sufficient parking spaces have been set aside for our use. But to be safe please arrive by 6:30 PM. Do not confuse the Ranger House with the Ranger Station Visitor Center commonly used by the Sierra Club for various functions.

Half the gain on the return (but thankfully most of it on old forest roads). We expect significant dirt road driving suitable for most passenger cars. Lookout Mountain is best known for its use, in conjunction with Mount Wilson, in very precisely measuring the speed of light in 1926. Second peak will be Sunset Peak. Sunset Peak provides a vista that includes Lookout Mountain #2, Mount Baldy, Thunder Mountain, Sugarloaf Peak and others as well as a nice view of the setting sun. We'll start at Sheep Pass Campground and hike part way around Ryan on the east, then ascend a nice (steep in places) ridge to the summit. After admiring the views, we'll return on the trail to the campground in plenty of time for the potluck. I: Monument Mountain (1594'), Mastodon Peak (3400'): Hannukah is past and Christmas ahead, so join a Holiday Hike instead. Come to the HPS Joshua Tree weekend and help bring in the Season with two Lower Peak climbs after Saturday night's festivities. Monument is 5 miles round trip, 1594' gain and is the highest point in the often windy Hexie Mountains. A trailess three miles gently rising saunter of the southeast ridge leads to the steep-ish summit cone with commanding views of the desert in every direction. Mastodon will be a 2.6 miles loop hike, 400' gain with great views of the Salton Sea from the peak. Spend the weekend with your HPS (and Lower Peaks) friends (see Dec 11 write-ups). Rather than just hiking the trail up to the mine and peak and back down again, let's do the entire Lost Horse Mine Loop. Somewhere around 7 miles and 1500' gain: get a peak, meet a mine, visit some old ruins, and see a variety of terrain. All on trail, and at a mellow pace. Depending on the direction we choose to travel the loop, a possible pathfinder or explorer for the emblem-oriented. Directions: The Ranger House is located south of Los Feliz Blvd on the east side of Riverside Drive. It shares a large parking lot with Friendship Auditorium. From Los Feliz Blvd head south on Riverside Drive, past the soccer fields on your left to Friendship Auditorium. (Friendship Auditorium is white and the side facing Riverside Drive is a series of arches.) The entrance immediately in front of Friendship Auditorium may be the only entrance open to the parking lot. Enter here and proceed to the north end of the parking lot. The Ranger House is a smaller facility located in the extreme north end of the parking lot. The parking lot may be quite busy. Friendship Auditorium is heavily used by large groups. Do not despair: Sufficient parking spaces have been set aside for our use. But to be safe please arrive by 6:30 PM. Do not confuse the Ranger House with the Ranger Station Visitor Center commonly used by the Sierra Club for various functions.

O: LA XMAS by Night: Join our annual night hike to give food and clothing to the homeless living on the streets. Hike approximately 8 miles. Wear warm clothing and sturdy shoes. We'll meet at the Chinatown station on the Metro Gold Line located at College Street and Spring Street at midnight Saturday night. After distribution of food and clothing we'll crisscross the streets of downtown LA winding up at the Original Pantry at approximately 4 AM for breakfast, then hike or take subway back to Chinatown. I: Chaparrosa Peak (5541'), Black Mountain #3 (6149'): Hike these two peaks in the Yucca Valley area at a moderate pace. Chaparrosa will entail 6 miles round trip with 1200' of gain. Black Mountain #4 will entail 4 miles round trip with 1200' of gain. Both hikes begin on a dirt road; however, much of the hiking will follow a use trail. If the dirt road to the Black Mountain trailhead is not drivable, we'll substitute an alternate peak with comparable difficulty. Please bring: lug soles, rain gear, hat, lunch & liquids to drink. O: Henninger Flats Conditioning Hike: Every Thursday night - 6 miles round trip, 1400' gain aerobic conditioning hike. Great views of LA Basin and the night sky. Museum is often open when we arrive at the Flats so you can learn about history of area during the brief rest before starting back down. Meet 6:55 PM (we leave promptly at 7 PM) every Thursday at gate at Pinecrest (exit 210 Fwy at Altadena Dr, N 2½ miles to Crescent Dr, R to Pinecrest). Remember the neighbors; keep your voices down as we gather. Bring water, flashlight, sturdy shoes. Rain/landslides cancel.
