PAST Scheduled Outings - 2009

This is a list of Hundred Peaks Section sponsored outings (with a smattering of other Sierra Club outings of interest to HPS) that have been published in the section newsletter, the Lookout and/or the Angeles Chapter Schedule of Activities and/or the section's mailing list for outings and announcements.

Jan 1 Thu Hundred Peaks, PV-SB, Long Beach, Natural Science
I: San Jacinto Peak (10,804'), Folly Peak (10,480'), Drury Peak (10,160'), Marion Mountain (10,320') via Snowshoe: Moderately paced, strenuous over varying terrain from the tram. We will attempt up to 4 peaks, resulting in 10 miles and 3500' gain. The leaders have made this San Jacinto pilgrimage for 8 years. The ocean, Mount Charleston and the Channel Islands have often been visible. Take time to learn from our naturalist about the fauna and flora. Bring 10 essentials, lunch, and water. I: Villager Peak (5756'), Rabbit Peak (6640'): Very strenuous cross-country day hike in Anza Borrego Desert State Park. 21 miles round trip, 8000' gain, paced to complete in 15 hours, with an early start time. O: Temescal Peak (2126'): Learn about the Wilderness Travel Course on this hike through oak glens and chaparral in Topanga State Park. Info will be provided on the ten essentials of safe mountain travel. We will hike to the park's highest peak with spectacular views. 8 miles round trip, 1100' gain on fire road and trail. Meet 9 AM at Trippet Ranch fee parking lot (from Topanga Cyn Blvd, E on Entrada Dr for 1 mi, turning L at every opportunity until parking lot). Leaders: ROBERT MYERS, JANE SIMPSON
Jan 3-4 Sat-Sun Hundred Peaks
I: Bernard Peak (5430'), Little Berdoo Peak (5440'), Lost Horse Peak (5313'), Ryan Mountain (5457'), Mt Perspiration (5560'): Join us us for one or both days to pick up these Joshua Tree NP summits. Saturday, drive Geology Tour Rd to hike B & LB; - 7 miles, 1800' gain cross country. High clearance vehicles welcome. If the road is closed we'll try something else in the area from pavement. Sunday, pathfinders to Lost Horse and Ryan, avoiding trails where possible, topped off with a quick jaunt to Inspiration. 13 miles, 3200' gain. Possible car camp Sat night. O: Cuyama Peak (5878'): Help the Doggetts celebrate their LEAD List Finish by joining one of three rendezvous hikes. The longest hike will be from Lower Tinta Campground (12 miles round trip with 3500' gain). The moderate hike will proceed up the Dry Canyon Jeep Trail (4.5 miles round trip with 1200' Gain). The easiest hike will be a drive-up. All three groups should arrive at the Lookout Tower around noontime. Please bring: water, lunch, cookies, lug soles & a jacket. Contact the leaders to find your meeting information. This Cuyama trip will be contingent upon good weather allowing the Doggetts to LEAD Santa Cruz Peak. O: Mt Lukens (5074'): Join us on this Mid Winter Hike to the highest point in the City of L.A. Hike from Deukmejian Park in La Crescenta via Crescenta View Trail and fire road. Return via Deukmejian West Trail. Great views to Catalina. 9 miles round trip, 3000' gain. Well-mannered K-9's welcome. Meet 9 AM Deukmejian Park (from 210 Freeway, exit Pennsylvania Ave, go north to Foothill Blvd., left to New York, right to top of New York, left on Markridge 1 block to park entrance on right.) O: Mount Emma (5273'), Old Mount Emma (5063'), Cole Point (5604'): Emma and Old Emma are about 4 miles round trip, 1200' gain for these peaks with some (sometimes steep) ups and downs between them. Meet at 6:45 AM at the North Orange County Rideshare point or at 7:30 AM at the intersection of Trabuco Canyon and Trabuco Creek Roads (where you leave the pavement). Sunday, hike to Little Berdoo, a very remote peak in Joshua Tree National Park from the Keys View (paved) road. We will hike through the Blue Cut. This is an awesome landmark! The entire hike should be about 16 miles round trip with 2000' of gain. All of the hike will be cross-country and we'll need to maintain a strong pace. NO beginners, please. Monday, hike to Lost Horse and Ryan, two fine peaks in Joshua Tree National Park at a moderate pace. Liebre Twins and a nearby neighbor (the high point of Tejon Ranch) that might be a possible Mount MacRuer (6803'). Now on Tejon Ranch. Liebre Twins is approximately 6 miles round trip, 2000' gain. Visiting Tejon Ranch's high point adds about 2½ miles and 600' gain. Depending on the winter and weather, a chance for marvelous wildflowers. You know the story: Baldylocks heads out from her Mount Baldy Village home at the strike of dawn and hikes up 6000' in 6 miles to the top of Mount Baldy (10,064') where, gazing eastward, she spies Mama T, Papa T and Baby T, aka the Three Ts. "A T party!" she exclaims, then scrambles over Devil's Backbone, past the ski lift and up Thunder Mountain (8587'), Telegraph Peak (8985') and Timber Mountain (8303') before descending Icehouse Canyon to Grandma's house and a waiting car shuttle. "Only 20 miles and 8000' gain - this hike was ju-u-u-u-st right!" Long, strenuous and paced to complete pre-dark. We'll park at Islip Saddle before climbing to Windy Gap and continuing along the ridge to Mt. Hawkins. Next we'll head to Copter Ridge after which we will descend 1000' down the side of a canyon and cross the South Fork of the San Gabriel River before climbing back out of the canyon and visiting the remains of an old fire lookout tower on South Hawkins. I: Palm Springs Tram (8450'), Mount San Jacinto (10,804') Moonlight Hike: Strenuous hike, 10 miles, 8300' gain to tram with additional 10 miles round trip, 2400' gain to the peak. We'll start hiking before midnight Friday. With the advent of the moonlight aspect of the hike, we've been getting many more successful peak baggers, so we'll attempt to have two groups, hopefully both SJ bound, one faster, the other naturalizing along the way. Of course, any who wishes can head back down at the tram after a mere 8300' gain. Bring money for tram ride and taxi back to cars. Given the possibility of heat being an issue, we may instead ride up on the tram on Saturday morning and hike as many of the nearby peaks as possible - San Jacinto Peak (10,804'), Folly Peak (10,480'), Drury Peak (10,160'), Cornell Peak (9750'), Jean Peak (10,670') and Marion Mountain (10,320') - probably as one group. O: Telescope Peak (11,049'), Wildrose Peak (9064'): Hike the Panamints with us to the high point of Death Valley enjoying Limber and Bristlecone Pines along the way and a view of Badwater and the valley below. Wildrose Peak Trail goes through a Pinyon Pine and Juniper forest and also promises spectacular views. Several campgrounds are available, including the Mahogany Flat Campground (8133') adjacent to the Telescope Peak trailhead. Saturday we will do Telescope Peak for a hike of 14 miles round trip, and 3000' gain. Sunday morning hike 8 miles, 2600' gain from Onion Valley trailhead (9200') near Independence, over Kearsarge Pass (11,823') to scenic base camp by Charlotte Creek near Charlotte Lake at 10,370' elevation. This trip will especially suit hikers, with options from moderate to difficult including the John Muir Trail over Glen Pass, Rae Lakes, Vidette Meadow, Mt Rixford, Mt Bago and Mt Gould. O: Pine Creek Mule Pack: Sunday morning we will hike from the Pine Creek pack station, 6 miles, 2900' gain to our base camp in the Honeymoon Lake / Upper Pine Lake area. This camp is located for convenient access to outstanding hiking areas. For dayhikes, one choice is the Pine Creek trail into French Canyon and its numerous lakes: French, Moon, L, Elba Lakes & more or continue down French Canyon to Royce Falls. Or take the Italy Pass trail to beautiful Granite Park and on to Italy Pass. Or hike to Golden Lake & Royce Lakes or into lake-filled Chalfant basin. For those inclined to peak bagging, Mt Julius Caesar, Royce Peak & Merriam Peak are available. Only five layover days to try to take it all in. Enjoy daily happy hours and a couple of potlucks. O: Saddleback Mountain (5687'): This is an all day hike to the summit of Orange County's highest point, Santiago Peak. We'll gain almost 4000' over the 8 mile one-way distance from the trailhead in Trabuco Canyon. We go up the occasionally strenuous Holy Jim Trail to where it connects with the Main Divide Road and then on to the summit, a bulldozed plateau planted with telecommunications towers. The trail alternates between sun and shade, so bring sunscreen, a hat and plenty of water. We leave from the Long Beach rideshare point at 6:30 AM sharp. Give yourself plenty of time to reach the trailhead. Take El Toro Road east from the 5 to Live Oak Canyon Road (which becomes Trabuco Canyon Road). Just past where it crosses the dry wash of Trabuco Creek turn east onto the unsigned dirt road. Follow this for 4.7 miles to the parking lot of the trailhead. Trucks and high clearance vehicles are best, but cars slowly driven should be fine. In addition, proposals for Bylaw changes, peak additions and deletions and other matters on which members will vote are discussed and votes are taken on whether to put them on the ballot. The business meeting follows the monthly Management Committee meeting. Join us at 6:30 PM for the management meeting; for 7 PM business meeting. Due to the Station Fire and the closure of Highway 2, we'll not be meeting at Newcomb's Ranch (as originally published), but instead at a Denny's Restaurant in Temple City: "The address is: 5603 N. Rosemead Blvd., Temple City, CA. 91780. It is just below the corner of Rosemead Blvd. and Las Tunas Drive, west side of the street. Tejon Ranch: This moderately easy 10.6-mile up and back trail gains 1,350 feet over 5 miles. Tejon Canyon was the historic pass used by early explorers to cross the Tehachapi Mountains. We will hike along Tejon Creek and see beautiful sycamore and willow riparian woodlands, several different types of oak woodlands, and incense cedars.This is the last hike that is scheduled for the year and it will be a great one! LA Xmas by Night: Spread some cheer and good will with the HPS on our annual trek through downtown LA distributing food and clothing (whatever you can bring) to the homeless living on the streets. Meet at the Chinatown station on the Metro Gold Line at the corner of College St. and Alameda St. at midnight Saturday night. From there well hike to the areas where the homeless usually congregate to make distribution, then crisscross LA, finally winding up at the Original Pantry for breakfast. Then we return to Chinatown. O: Wilson Canyon/Los Pinetos Trail: North of Sylmar. Moderately paced 10 miles round trip, 1600' gain hike in Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy park with magnificent oaks and views to Wilson Saddle. Meet at the Wilson Canyon Trailhead at 9 AM with water, lunch, suitable clothing and footwear. There is a $5 Parking Fee. To reach trailhead, go west on the 210, exit on Roxford and turn right, then bend right on Olive View Drive. Continue past the main hospital and the four way stop at Bledsoe St., just before Fenton Avenue. Turn left on Wilson Canyon Trail Drive. If you want to carpool, meet at 8:45 AM in Sylmar: exit I-5 at Roxford St, meet on Larkspur St (observe the no parking signs.) Or meet 8:30 AM La Canada rideshare point.
