Jan 3 Wed Local Hikes, Hundred Peaks

I: Rosa Point (5038'): Very strenuous cross country trek over steep, rocky terrain covered with ocotillo, agave, and all four varieties of cholla in a remote desert region of the Santa Rosa Mtns near Indio, 12 miles round trip, 5500' gain. Diehards might also consider staying over with leaders in area carcamp to pick up nearby San Ysidro Mountain on Sunday. Paved road driving both days. Jan 6 Sat Hundred Peaks
I: Will Thrall Peak (7845') and Pleasant View Ridge (7983'): Moderately paced 17 mile, 4700' gain hike in the northern San Gabriel Mtns. Starting at Devils Punchbowl County Park, we will take the Burkhart Trail to Burkhart Saddle and then hike off-trail to the peaks. Great desert views. Meet 7 AM Sylmar rideshare point. O: Rabbit Peak #1 (5307'), Granite Mountain #1 (6600'), Round Top Mountain (6316') and Iron Mountain #3 (5040'): 10 miles total distance, 4000'gain. This is a strenuous loop hike of the "Little Four" that will utilize use trails on steep ridges going up and coming down. Contact leader for meeting place and time. O: Woodson Mountain (2894'), Iron Mountain (2696'), Eagle Peak (3226'): Join us for one or both of these days in the San Diego area for these three great Lower Peaks. Woodson and Iron, both in the Poway area, will be climbed on the first day. Woodson is 3.2 miles and 1200' of gain. Iron is 6 miles and 1000' of gain. We will hike Eagle (south of Julian) the next day, after some easy dirt road driving. It is 5 miles and 1100' of gain. Email leaders at least a few days before for information. I: Warren Point (5103'): Practice navigation for Sunday's checkoff on this 6 mile round trip, 1300' gain hike in the pinyon pine and juniper region of western Joshua Tree National Park. We will take a cross-country route to approach Warren Point from the west and practice micro-navigation skills along the way. O: Echo Mountain (3207'): 5 miles round trip, 1400' gain. Who said you couldn't climb a mountain? Join us on this slow to moderately paced hike to one historical peak in the front range of the San Gabriel Mtns. Great for beginners. Meet 8 AM North Orange County rideshare or 9 AM at end of Lake Ave in Pasadena (Exit I-210 on Lake and follow it to the end, park at curbside). Bring lugs, water, lunch. Rain cancels. Jan 13 Sat Wilderness Adventures, Hundred Peaks
O: Muir Peak (4688'), Mount Lowe (5603'): 10 miles round trip, 2000' gain hike starting at Eaton Saddle, rounding the east side of Mount Lowe, passing Inspiration Point and out to the peak named for the Sierra Club's founder. Our return will take us to the top of Mount Lowe via the west side trail before returning to trailhead. Meet 8:30 AM La Canada rideshare point with water, lunch, good footwear. O: Sierra Peak (3045'), Pleasants Peak (4007'), Bedford Peak (3800'), Bald Peak (3947'), Trabuco (4604'), Santiago (5687'), Modjeska (5496'): These Lower Peaks in Santa Ana Mtns are short distance hikes from the Main Divide Truck Trail, provided that the dirt roads are open to motor vehicles. Santiago is a drive-up, and Modjeska is 2 miles round trip with 300' of gain. The driving will require clearance and possibly 4WD. Call or email Leaders: DAVE COMERZAN, GEORGE WYSUP

O: Eightieth birthday potluck and hike: Guess which leader was born on January 31, 1927. Easy and more strenuous hikes will be lead from Deukmejian Park in La Crescenta - (exit the #210 freeway at Pennsylvania Ave & go North to Foothill turn left (W) to New York Ave turn right (N) drive to the top then left (W) on Markridge for a short ways to Park entrance) All hikes should return to park by 12 noon for potluck and festivities. Meet in La Canada at 9 AM or at park at 9:15 for hikes, or by noon just for potluck & fun. Bring water, good footwear, suitable clothing layers, potluck item to share, utensils, folding tables and chairs if convenient, pictures or anecdotes to "roast" or esteemed leader. Light rain or shower does not cancel. (At the park, there are 4 tables under cover and an additional 6 tables in the open. The caretakers have even offered to put up tarps if necessary.) I: Snowshoe in the San Gabriel Mountains: Snow conditions will determine actual route. Maximum 10 miles, 1500' gain, moderately strenuous and paced. Route requires good conditioning, but beginning showshoers are welcome. Lack of snow will change outing to slightly longer dayhike. Meet 8 am La Canada rideshare pt. Bring water, lunch, snowshoes, sturdy waterproof boots, hiking poles with snowbaskets, suitable warm and water resistant clothing layers, hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, USFS parking pass. O: Monrovia Peak (5409'): Moderately paced, 20 mile, 4500' gain, strenuous hike, mostly on dirt roads. Mileage may be shortened by doing a loop on the return. I: Martinez Mountain (6560'), Sheep Mountain (5141'): Rescheduled from the backpack version of Dec 9, 2006. The historical balancing act continues. These peaks are just high enough to attract stormy weather, but deserty enough to be too hot in the spring. Our solution is plug away until they're done. This very strenuous dayhike will require an early start for 18 miles round trip, 5000' gain. Martinez Mountain is also on the DPS List. Much rugged cross-country travel in desert terrain. O: Strawberry Peak (6164'): 6 miles round trip, 1500' gain from Red Box. Slightly shorter option avoids the steep 950' gain from saddle to the Peak but loses the spectacular views at the top. Feb 10-11 Sat-Sun Hundred Peaks, Lower Peaks
I: Malapai Hill (4280+), Lost Horse Mountain (5313'), Ryan Mountain (5457'), Queen Mountain (5680+), Mount Inspiration (5560+), Warren Point (5102'): Enjoy a winter carcamp in Joshua Tree National Park. Much easy cross-country scrambling in desert terrain. Malapai Hill is a candidate for the Lower Peaks List. First two Saturday as a one-way car shuttle trek through area of unusual lava plugs and rockpiles, 7 mile traverse, 1600' gain, with Ryan Mountain as optional afternoon workout for another 1100' gain. Carcamp Saturday night. Final three Sunday as separate cross-country hikes totalling 10 miles round trip, less than 3000' gain if you opt for all three. O: San Mateo Peak (3591'), Los Pinos Peak (4510'), Trabuco Peak (4604'): San Mateo Peak is 6 miles round trip with 900' gain. Los Pinos Peak, just off the Main Divide Truck trail, is about 1.2 miles round trip with 500'of gain. Trabuco Peak is on a short fire break from the Main Divide Truck trail. O: Sunset Peak (5796'): We hike the pleasant road to this summit near Mount Baldy with an easy pace suitable for beginners, 7 miles round trip, 1300' gain. Feb 24 Sat Lower Peaks, Orange County
O: Morton Peak LO (4624'), Cram Peak (4162'): Easy paced hike to two peaks in the San Bernardino Mountains, 5.5 miles one way with 1,200' gain and 1,000' loss on trail. If gate is closed add 1.5 miles, 650' gain. Visit the refurbished Lookout on Morton, then a long ridge walk to Cram. Great views of San Gorgonio in snow and the Angelus Oaks Dam. I: Rattlesnake Peak (5826'): Strenuous cross-country, moderately paced outing to a famous brush monster in the San Gabriels, 12 miles round trip, 3700' gain. The trail was in good shape at last visit. Trip highlight is reading the comments from hundreds of previously successful hikers in the several register books. I: Queen Mountain (5482'): 12 miles and 2000' of hard won cross-country gain on the edge of the Wonderland of Rocks to climb this HPS peak in Joshua Tree National Park, visiting 4 hidden Indian pictograph sites en route. I: Beauty (5548'), Iron Springs (5755') & Combs (6193'): Saturday: Meet for breakfast, then hike up Combs, 5 miles 1200' gain. Camp out beneath the stars Saturday night. Sunday: Up early for Beauty & Iron Springs Mountain, 8.5 miles, 1700' gain. Expect lots of brush, maybe some ticks. What was this area like when stagecoaches shuttled passengers across the dry, dusty desert trails over 100 years ago? I: Mayan Peak (6108'), Butterbredt Peak (5997'), Cross Mountain (5203'), Chuckwalla Mountain (5029'): Hike these southern Sierra Peaks north of Mojave and camp in Red Rock Canyon State Park. Saturday: Mayan and Butterbredt, total 6 miles/3000' gain. Sunday: Cross and Chuckwalla, total 12 miles/4000' gain. Lots of dirt road driving. Join us for one or two days. Mar 3-4 Sat-Sun Hundred Peaks, Desert Peaks
I: The BIG Rabbit: Rabbit Peak #2 (6640+), Villager Peak (5756'): Traditional, very strenuous desert backpack near the Salton Sea, 21 miles round trip, 8000' gain overall. Terrain is steep, rocky, and infested with groves of cholla, agave, and other thorny obstacles. Must carry all water for the overnight camp near Villager. I: Keys Peak (4483'), Mt. Mel (3814'), Monument Mtn (4834'), Mastodon Peak (3371'): Hike these splendid Joshua Tree N.P. peaks. Tuesday Mt Mel and Keys from Indian Cove; 9 miles, 2200' round trip. on Boy Scout trail with some rugged desert cross-country, including high class 2 scrambling on both summits. Tuesday night car camp. Wednesday 6 miles, 2000' gain cross-country to Monument (high point of the Hexie range) after some dirt road driving, followed by a separate hike of 3 miles, 400' gain round trip to Mastodon, with scramble to the summit; both mtns near Cottonwood entrance. O: Cajon Walking Tour: Cleghorn Mountain (5333'), Cajon Mountain (5360+), Sugarpine Mountain (5478'), Monument Peak #2 (5290'): Downed trees usually block the roads in winter but you can join this strenuous walking tour near Cajon Pass and give your wheels a rest. First three peaks 16 miles round trip, 3300' gain, beginning with the PCT section up to Cleghorn Ridge then continuing along rocky roads through high forested ridgelines. Madulce Trail Clearing: The trail leading up to Madulce from Cox Flats has become extremely overgrown, to the point it is no longer passable for equestrians and difficult for backpackers. Our project will focus on brush clearing. This is a three-day project but for those who can stay longer, we will also be staying through Thursday the 21st. Goat packer Mike Smith will be leading the first three days of the project and long-time project leader Ray Ford will be there for the last three days. No training is needed though you should be in good physical condition and experienced in overnight and backpack type camping. Baldy Village home at the strike of dawn and hikes up 6000' in 6 miles to the top of Mt. Baldy (10,064') where, gazing eastward, she spies Mama T, Papa T and Baby T, aka the Three Ts. "T party!" she exclaims, then scrambles over Devil's Backbone, past the ski lift and up Thunder Mt. (8587'), Telegraph Peak (8985') and Timber Mt. (8303') before descending Icehouse Canyon to Grandma's house and a waiting car shuttle. Only 20 miles and 8000' gain - this hike was ju-u-u-u-st right! Join us on camping adventure as we camp at an elevation of 4000' in the mountains above Death Valley National Park on Friday evening (the days are warm and nights cool!). Trailhead in the 60's. Saturday, we'll hike (optional for attendees) to the top of Telescope Peak - the highest peak in the Park, at 11,000', with spectacular views in all directions. You will see Badwater in Death Valley on one side, and the Panamint Valley on the other... We also visit the Charcoal Kilns. The hike itself is a 3000' elevation gain in about 14 miles round trip. The hike is considered strenuous due to the gain and distance. The weather while always unpredictable should be in the 60's and 70's. O: San Gabriel Peak (6163'), Mt. Disappointment (5960'), Mt. Lowe (5603'), and Mt. Markham (5742'): An easy way to do historic hiking with the four mountains. We start from the San Gabriel Peak and Mt. Disappointment then across the white diorite cliffs to Markham Saddle. From here, we climb the north slope of the mountain to the summit of Mt. Lowe and Mt. Markham (optional). 5.5 miles with 2200' gain. A 2.5 miles car shuttle required between Mt. Disappointment fire road and Eaton Saddle. Meet 9 am La Cañada rideshare point. Moderately strenuous, moderate hike over rocky steep cross-country terrain. Day 1: Red Mtn hike (4 miles round trip, 1800' gain) and visits to Garlock and Randsburg. Car camping or stay in Ridgecrest. Day 2: Black hike from the north (8 miles round trip, 1900' gain) with a petroglyph tour. High clearance vehicles on 2nd day. I: Messenger Peak (6015'), Mt Gleason (6520'), Cole Point (5604'): Cool autumn hike to a set of peaks south of Palmdale. First peak not on the List, but it's the westernmost 6000-footer in the San Gabriels, so let's include it in a pleasant loop trip via PCT to Mt Gleason from the west side, easy 2 miles round trip, 500' gain. I: Martinez Mountain (6560+'): Another installment in Gary and Sue's series of HPS/DPS joint hikes and a revival of the DPS "Beers of the World" tradition. Saturday's strenuous hike of Martinez will be a full day, 3700' gain, 18 miles, 12 hours. Brew-tasting and DPS-style potluck dinner that evening at Pinyon Flats campground (camping fee). Sunday we may try some nearby, easier, HPS peaks before returning home; agenda based on the group's desires. O: LA Xmas by Night: Join us for our annual nighttime walk of downtown LA and distribute food or clothing to the homeless. The walk starts near Chinatown, proceeds to the areas used by the homeless, then criss-crosses downtown, finally arriving at the Original Pantry for breakfast at about 4 AM Sunday morning. Dress warmly and wear good walking shoes. Bring food such as sandwiches or fruit, or clothing to give to the needy. Meet midnight Saturday night at the Chinatown Metro Gold Line station. I: Hines Peak (6716'), Topatopa Bluff (6367'), Chief Peak (5560'): Moderately strenuous walk on road, trail, and brushy, steep and loose cross country to three peaks above Ojai for a total of 9 miles round trip with 2150' of gain. Ridge to Hines has a narrow unstable section that some may opt to sit out (with co-Leader Karen). High clearance 4WD advised. Forest Service vehicle specific permit required to drive road, and participation will be limited by available space in 4WD vehicles. To obtain permit (if you can bring your own 4WD, it'd be helpful!), contact the Ojai Ranger 805-646-4348 and request a permit for Nordhoff Ridge Road. Slow pace. Climb Martinez (on HPS and DPS list; 7 miles round trip, 2400' gain) as we enjoy the beauty of the Santa Rosa Wilderness desert terrain, the surrounding mountains, and views of Palm Desert and the Coachella Valley.
