great Lower Peaks. Woodson and Iron, both in the Poway area, will be
climbed on the first day. Woodson is 3.2 miles and 1200' of gain. Iron
is 6 miles and 1000' of gain. We will hike Eagle (south of Julian) the
next day, after some easy dirt road driving. It is 5 miles and 1100' of

January 31, 1927. Easy and more strenuous hikes will be lead from
Deukmejian Park in La Crescenta - (exit the #210 freeway at
Pennsylvania Ave & go North to Foothill turn left (W) to New York Ave
turn right (N) drive to the top then left (W) on Markridge for a short
ways to Park entrance) All hikes should return to park by 12 noon for
potluck and festivities. Meet in La Canada at 9 AM or at park at 9:15
for hikes, or by noon just for potluck & fun. Bring water, good
footwear, suitable clothing layers, potluck item to share, utensils,
folding tables and chairs if convenient, pictures or anecdotes to
"roast" or esteemed leader. Light rain or shower does not cancel.
(At the park, there are 4 tables under
cover and an additional 6 tables in the open. The caretakers have even

Downed trees usually block the roads in winter but you can join this strenuous
walking tour near Cajon Pass and give your wheels a rest. First three peaks 16
miles round trip, 3300' gain, beginning with the PCT section up to Cleghorn
Ridge then continuing along rocky roads through high forested

Madulce Trail Clearing:
The trail leading up to Madulce from Cox Flats has become extremely
overgrown, to the point it is no longer passable for equestrians and
difficult for backpackers. Our project will focus on brush
clearing. This is a three-day project but for those who can stay
longer, we will also be staying through Thursday the 21st. Goat packer
Mike Smith will be leading the first three days of the project and
long-time project leader Ray Ford will be there for the last three
days.
No training is needed though you should be in good physical condition and
experienced in overnight and backpack type camping.

these peaks near Morro Bay and Santa Maria with us. To avoid a lot of
driving we will do them in two days with an overnight stay in
Santa Maria. Cerro Alto is 5 miles with 1600' gain, Valencia is 4 miles
with 1300' gain, and Gaviota 6 miles with 2100' gain.
We'll hike the first
two peaks on the first day, Gaviota on the second day. Make

trip. First peak is a relatively isolated summit east of Mt Pacifico in
Angeles Forest, up to 10 miles round trip, 1800' gain from near Alder Saddle,
depending on road conditions. May visit "Barely Flat" or other nearby peak

Our fourth annual - for Big Bad Wolves only! You know the story: Baldylocks
heads out from her Mt. Baldy Village home at the strike of
dawn and hikes up 6000' in 6 miles to the top of Mt. Baldy (10,064') where,
gazing eastward, she spies Mama T, Papa T and Baby T, aka the Three Ts.
"T party!" she exclaims,
then scrambles over Devil's Backbone, past the ski lift
and up Thunder Mt. (8587'), Telegraph Peak (8985') and
Timber Mt. (8303') before descending Icehouse Canyon to
Grandma's house and a waiting car shuttle. Only 20 miles
and 8000' gain - this hike was ju-u-u-u-st right! This
will be a very long and strenuous hike, paced to complete

project near San Rafael Peak. We'll be car camping at McKinley Springs
and working on re-opening the connector trail that leads down to Big

Join us on camping adventure as we camp at an elevation of 4000' in the
mountains above Death Valley National Park on Friday evening (the days are warm
and nights cool!). Trailhead in the 60's.
Saturday, we'll hike (optional for attendees) to the top of Telescope Peak - the
highest peak in the Park, at 11,000', with spectacular views in all
directions. You will see Badwater in Death Valley on one side, and the Panamint
Valley on the other... We also visit the Charcoal Kilns.
The hike itself is a 3000' elevation gain in about 14 miles round trip. The
hike is considered strenuous due to the gain and distance. The weather while
always unpredictable should be in the 60's and 70's. Dress in layers, bring 10
essentials for the hike and camping gear. Sunday optional peaks are
avaliable. Trip includes happy hour snacks and a Saturday night hot pasta

to Three Points:
Hike through your homeland in the San Gabriel Mountains. Moderately paced 4
day, 36 mile, one-way backpack on PCT. Starting at Vincent Gap, we will spend
the night on the summit Mt. Baden-Powell (9399'). The next day, we will climb
Ross Mountain, 2000' down and then back up.
Then, a side trip to the site of the So. Mt. Hawkins Lookout.
We will travel through Islip Saddle,
Cooper Canyon, and Cloudburst Summit. Learn about the natural history of the

Friday. With the advent of the moonlight aspect of the hike, we've been getting
many more successful peak baggers, so this time we'll have two groups, hopefully
both San Jacinto bound, one faster, the other naturalizing along the way. Of

Two delightful peaks in the San Bernardino National Forest near
Idyllwild. Dirt road driving to reach trailheads.
Black is a one mile round trip hike with 400' gain, up a dirt
road, to a wonderful lookout tower.
We do Castle Rocks from the not-especially rocky side. Expect
a nice hike on the PCT with a brief cross-country excursion to
the summit, 4 1/2 miles round trip, 900' gain. Consider
staying over for the HPS Fall Festival on Saturday and Sunday.

Enjoy pine forests and the picturesque high country of our San Emigdio
Range and the grasslands of Wind Wolves. We will be immersing
ourselves into an environment that is very similar to Tejon Ranch,
by visiting the Wind Wolves Preserve.
We will be touring the proposed development areas, as well as the highly
unique areas within Wind Wolves.
Take time to learn from
our naturalists about the fauna and flora, and help us plan the
next stages in our goal to create a new state or national park.
Lots of driving. Some easy, some hard hiking.
We'll be car camping
at Wind Wolves for one night, so bring your best potluck items,
and ideas (become an integral part of the campaign.)
With luck, we will see Eagles, rather Condors.

Moderately paced 10 miles, 3500' gain hike in the beautiful San
Jacinto Mtns. Ride the tram, and then hike cross-country to the
peaks.
Come celebrate the leader's 200th peak.

I: Martinez Mountain (6560'+), Sheep Mountain (5141'):
20 miles, 5300' gain, strenuous backpack.
Saturday, backpack in 5 miles and 1000' gain to campsite near
Cactus Spring. Climb Martinez (on HPS and DPS list; 7 miles round trip, 2400'
gain) as we
enjoy the beauty of the Santa Rosa Wilderness desert terrain, the surrounding
mountains, and views of Palm Desert and the Coachella Valley. Sunday morning,
climb Sheep (3 miles round trip, 1100' gain) and then pack out (5 miles,
800').

I: Lost Horse Mountain (5313'), Mount Inspiration (5560'),
Ryan Mountain (5457'):
Moderately paced hikes on trail and cross country to some of the
finest peaks in Joshua Tree National Park. Moderately
strenuous, around 10 miles, 2700' gain hike. Do as many peaks
as you wish. Beginners are welcome.
Take time to learn from our naturalist
about the fauna and flora. Bring 10 essentials, lunch, and water.
