Mount Hawkins, Copter Ridge

11 September 1993

By: Julie Rush

Leaders: Bobcat Thompson, Julie Rush

Twenty-five human participants and 6 K9's met to hike the new addition to the HPS list, Copter Ridge, via Mt Hawkins. As Bill T. described it in his exploratory, the ridge from Mt Hawkins 'down' to Copter is quite a pleasant pine covered route. Too bad one has to reclimb Hawkins on the way back, but what's a little exercise?

The day was a fine respite from the city blues. Adding peaks in the local mountains seems to bring old hikers back to them. There were quite a few avid HPSers and list finishers attending, as well as some well-behaved veteran K9ers. Ruskie, our official HIPS mascot, attained his 155th first time peaks and his 54th! lead assist that day.

This hike is an excellent example of humans and dogs enjoying each other's company and the great outdoors of our own San Gabriel Mountains.

Thanks to all the participants and to Bobcat for his usual puns which didn't get too many groans - at least not from the K9 gallery. I'd also like to thank him for his consistent support by leading co-sponsored trips with our fledgling K9 Committee. I hope that more of our leaders consider this option.
