Mount Wilson

2 November 1991

By: Southern Courtney

Leaders: Brent Washburne, Southern Courtney

Brent led our group of three women and four men up 3910' on a 9.4 mile route to reach the Wilson Pavilion in 3 hours and 45 minutes. The snack bar had just been closed by the Forest Service for some vague reason. No ice drinks this warm day!

Our hike had started from Chantry Flats a few minutes after 8 am. We took the shaded Gabrielino Trail for our first 2.8 miles with 1390' of gain, to the Sturtevant Trail junction above Spruce Camp. Here we turned right (north) and continued on the Gabrielino, not much shade on this part, for another 2.2 miles and 955' to Newcomb Pass. The Rim Trail starts at Newcomb Pass and climbs 1595' over 3.47 miles westward to reach the pavilion. The Rim Trail had outstanding views and varied terrain.

The return was via: Martin's Camp, Manzanita Ridge, Winter Creek Trail, Hoogee Camp, and Upper Winter Creek Trail. This route is only 7.11 miles.

The group was strong and fun to hike with. My thanks to all the fine hikers and to our pace setter, Brent.
