Middle Peak, Cuyamaca Peak (LO), Stonewall Peak, Oakzanita Peak, Monument Peak #1, Garnet Peak, Garnet Mountain

17 October 1987

By: Ruth Adler

Leaders: Ruth Adler, Jon Sheldon

It was a successful peakbaggers' weekend - we got all the peaks! The weather was perfect. The countryside was scenic, bucolic, and just plain nice to look at. The group was great - nobody was either too slow or too fast. We all got along. What more could you ask for?

Most people drove down Friday night and all 29 of us (including the leaders) met Saturday morning at Paso Picacho Camp Ground at 7:45AM and set up the necessary car shuttle. We had an extremely nice hike up Middle and then on to Cuyamaca where we had lunch.

After lunch, we all hiked back to the cars and then most of us trudged up Stonewall and back to camp where we all ate watermelon contributed by Jon Fredland. The views were beautiful all day: fir and oak trees - evergreens interspersed with autumnal colors. I think these are some of the nicest peaks on the HPS list.

Saturday we had a community garbage bag salad with a variety of ingredients and plenty of salad dressing. Julie King contributed some great homemade guacamole. Then we shared desserts and had a great campfire using the wood thoughtfully provided by Marc Ratner. Roasted marshmallows were a great hit. The leaders were really glad - they were left over from our Desert Divide trip.

Sunday, we were up and driving and peakbagging by 7:45AM. First, Oakzanita (nice hike), then lunch, then Monument #1 (great views) where Marc Ratner got his 25th peak and can now become an official HPS member, then the Garnets by 4:30PM and everyone said good-bye and split.

This was a, really nice weekend made possible by the careful planning and leadership of Jon Sheldon and the really good group of peakbaggers (too many to cite by name).
