Mount San Antonio

3 October 1987 (From the Village)

By: Patty Kline

Leaders: Patty Kline, Tom Neely

This was one of the many Oktoberfest hikes of the weekend. Seven of us met at 7:00AM at the Pomona carpool point for one of the hottest hikes of the year. It was 108° in downtown Los Angeles that day. What an appropriate day for a "death march". Since none of us wanted to die, we took our time going up the peak, leaving the church parking lot in the village at about 7:45 AM to arrive 4 1/2 hours later on the top. It was six miles and 6000' of gain. Matt McBride planed on meeting us at the church parking lot, but when we weren't there by 7:30AM, he left for the top, doing it in under 4 hours.

Just as we were reaching the summit we met another Oktoberfest hike, led by Jon Sheldon. They came to Baldy via the San Antonio ski hut.

We had a leisurely lunch on the summit. Bob Judson and Will Davgie took long naps, while Patty Kline, Matt McBride and Tom Moumblow had a small Hawaii trip reunion from the Sierra Club trip they were all on last June.

Many thanks to Tom Neely who was my assistant leader. Bob Michael, who was originally scheduled to assist, couldn't because he lives so far away.
