Sugarloaf Mountain, Onyx Peak #1

14 September 1968

By: Bob Funke

Leader: Don McLellan
Asst.: Bob Funke

Forty-three climbers caravanned from South Fork Campgrounds over a very dusty road to Wild Horse Meadows. Ably led by Don McLellan, the went over four false peaks on a good trail to the top of Sugarloaf. The day was very clear and afforded excellent views of pastel-hued dry Baldwin Lake and the deep blue of Big Bear. Lunch on the summit plus attempts to bag butterflies with plastic bags substituting for nets added to the enjoyment.

After hiking down (the assistant leader was not exactly lost but a bit confused) twenty-four people went to Onyx -- a dusty drive up -- and twelve others left the group to bag three or four other nearby peaks.
