Mount Lukens

11 February 1968

By: Dick Akawie

Leaders: Dick and Shirley Akawie

A cool overcast day greeted about 65 hikers who gathered in Big Tujunga Canyon on Sunday, February 11th, for an assault on Mt. Lukens (5074'), the highest point in the city of Los Angeles. Some of the hikers were delayed because they ran into and temporarily joined an unannounced BMTC trip which was going up Trail Canyon, but everyone was sorted out eventually. At 8:40 a.m. we crossed the creek and proceeded up the Stone Canyon Trail, which was in fairly good shape. Although several turned back along the way, 53 finally reached the top at 11:30 a.m. after a 3300' gain, and signed the register. The view was tremendous, as the clouds covered the top just before we arrived. This was the leader's third climb of Mt. Lukens, and he has yet to see the view because of either rain or clouds each time. It was quite cold, we hurried through lunch and took off down the mountain. Everyone was down and out to the cars by 2:00 p.m.
