Description

Mount Sally, the origin of whose name is perhaps more interesting than the hike to the peak itself, lies adjacent to Mount Vetter and Mount Mooney, which it is usually hiked together with.

Route 1 follows a firebreak northeast from Shortcut Saddle; Route 2 southwest from a turnout.

Driving route

From the intersection of I-210 and Angeles Crest Highway (SR 2), drive north on Angeles Crest Highway 9.5 miles to Angeles Forest Highway. Keep straight.
Continue about 4.5 miles to the junction with the Mount Wilson Road at the Red Box Ranger Station.
Continue on Angeles Crest Highway about 4.5 miles farther to the large parking area at Shortcut Saddle. This is marked on the topo as “Shortcut Picnic Grounds”. Park here.

Hiking route

From the parking area (4780′), hike east up the brushy ridge on the south side of the highway. Follow the firebreak about a mile up to the summit.

Driving route

From the parking spot for Route 1, continue east on Angeles Crest Highway 1.8 miles to mile marker 45 and park on the left where convenient.

Hiking route

From the parking area (4980′), you will see a low ridge just meters east of the parking area. Obtain this ridge, turn right and hike southwest up the ridge to the summit. The second summit to the west is lower.

Historical note: Mount Sally is named for Stella (Sally) Neuman, a clerk on the staff of Forest Supervisor William Mendenhall. Sally’s name was placed on the map as a joke by one of her admirers.
