Sunset Peak 5,796'

3 November 2001

By: Leora Jones

Leaders: Leora and Ron Jones

The autumn Saturday morning dawned bright and clear above the lowlands, as 3 cars and 7 people headed for the old Route 1, starting point from Cow Canyon off Glendora Ridge road. The gate was open, and there was no sign present restricting access. Several groups of local people were also going up this trail, so we did too.

Ron is soon scheduled for a hip replacement and into the hike his hip became too painful to continue. He appointed Jean White to sweep for me, and we continued on up the fire road at a slow pace. Two members wanted a quicker return to the cars, signed out, and eventually returned to the cars about 20 minutes before we did. We have rescheduled this hike for next year when Ron can test out his new right hip!

One beautiful dog came with us, Montana, and she enjoyed the smells all over of the critters that couldn't be seen. The views along the way, and on the summit were terrific. Some fog cover remained over parts of the lowland, but the peaks and surrounding area were very clear.

After a short break on top for pictures, sign in, and snack, we headed back down the road. One interesting point to note, in the register on 9/13/01 someone from New York signed the register, and remarked on the stark contrast between the beauty of nature and wilderness, and the tragedy that hit our country and humanity on 9/11, just two days prior. They had a brother who made it out of the twin towers and was thankful to be alive.

We were back at the cars 1 1/2 hours after leaving the summit, and had a nice time with such a small group. Thanks to the participants, and to Jean for sweeping for me. They included: Jean White, Brigitte Dinaberg, Edward Afidchao, Jan & Janet Howell.
