About 30 HPS-ers and guests were undaunted by threatening weather, and completed the climbs of Mill, Crafts, and Heaps peaks as scheduled on Nov. 5, 1959. Much of the time the visibility approached zero as the group ascended right into the clouds. At one time on Crafts, handkerchiefs were commandeered, ripped into strips, and attached to bushes in order to be sure of finding the way back since no landmarks could be seen. Heaps is very close to the highway and normally one of the easiest on the list, but just finding it in the "soup" turned out to be a real problem. However, on the bright side -- the low visibility greatly simplified the divided rest stops.
