Description

Mount Lewis is a quick hike that can be added on at the end of a Throop Peak, Mount Baden Powell or other local peak day. It was named after the first Superintendent of Yosemite National Park who had worked in the San Gabriels in the early 1900’s
Route 1 describes the only way up and down Mount Lewis. The 1 mile round trip is a quick climb up a lightly used trail. The Jeffrey pines mentioned in the write up were mostly destroyed by a fire, but the views from the top are still worth the quick effort.

Continue about 4.5 miles to the junction with the Mount Wilson Road at the Red Box Ranger Station. Keep straight.
Continue 30.5 miles to Dawson Saddle. There is a highway maintenance building on the left (north) side of the road, and the road starts downhill at this point. Park here.

Hiking route

From the parking area (7901′), the trail to Lewis starts up a steep bank adjacent to the west side of the maintenance building.
Hike up it to the top of a ridge and then continue north along the ridge to the summit.
